New Year’s Dos and Don’ts

the customs of new year, 新年风俗, xin nian feng su

1. Wish everyone you meet a happy New Year by saying “gong xi fa cai”, which translates to “Have a happy and prosperous New Year!”
duì měi yī ɡè nǐ yù dào de rén dào yī shēnɡ“ɡōnɡ xǐ fā cái”,fān yì chénɡ yīnɡ wén jiù shì“zài xīn de yī nián lǐ yōnɡ yǒuxìnɡ fú fán rónɡ de shēnɡ huó”。
对  每  一 个 你 遇 到  的 人  道  一 声   “恭   喜 发 财 ”,翻  译 成    英   文  就  是 “在  新  的 一 年   里 拥   有 幸   福 繁  荣   的 生    活 ”。

2. Wear articles of red clothing because red symbolizes luck.
chuān hónɡ sè bù liào zuò chénɡ de shì pǐn,yīn wéi hónɡ sè zhāo shì zhe xìnɡ yùn;
穿    红   色 布 料   做  成    的 饰  品 ,因  为  红   色 昭   示  着  幸   运.

3. Eat vegetarian food because it’s not good to see blood.
chī sù shí, yīn wéi jiàn xuè shì bú jí lì de。
 吃  素 食 , 因  为  见   血  是  不 吉 利 的。

4. Buy new trousers because the Chinese word for trousers is “fu”, (Chinese homonym for wealth) .
mǎi xīn kù zǐ(yī fú),yīn wéi hàn yǔ lǐ kù zǐ jiù shì “fú”,(zài  hàn yǔ lǐ yǔ cái fù de“fù”xié yīn)。
买  新  裤 子(衣 服),因  为  汉  语 里 裤 子 就  是  “服”,(在   汉  语 里 与 财  富 的“富”谐  音 )。

5. Children should stay up as late as possible on New Year’s Eve for it is believed that the later they stay up, the longer their parents will live.
hái zǐ yīnɡ ɡāi zài chú xī zhī yè jìn kě nénɡ wǎn shuì,yīn wéi jù shuō tā men shuì de yuè wǎn,tā men de fù mǔ yuè chánɡ shòu。(xiónɡ hái zǐ ɡāi ɡāo xìnɡ le )
孩  子 应   该  在  除  夕 之  夜 尽  可 能   晚  睡  ,因  为  据 说   他 们  睡   的 越  晚 ,他 们  的 父 母 越  长 寿。(熊孩子该高兴了。)

6. Sit family (especially those older than yourself) and friends to pass on your wishes on good fortune for the New Year. (plus kids and single people will receive lai-see lucky red packets full of money.
bài fǎnɡ qīn qī pénɡ yǒu(yóu qí shì bǐ nǐ nián chánɡ de),chuán dì nǐ duì tā men lái nián xìnɡ fú de  měi hǎo zhù yuàn(lìnɡ wài hái zǐ hé dān shēn de rén jiānɡ huì dé dào zhuānɡ mǎn qián de xìnɡ yùn hónɡ bāo,chēnɡ wéi“lái xǐ”。)
拜  访   亲  戚 朋   友 (尤  其 是  比 你 年   长    的),传    递 你 对  他 们  来  年   幸   福 的  美  好  祝  愿  (另   外  孩  子 和 单  身   的 人  将    会  得 到  装     满  钱   的 幸   运  红   包 ,称    为 “来  喜”。)

7. Give two lai see to each child. Because happiness comes in two’s, do not just give one. This is your way of passing good luck to the next generation. Business owners also give lai see to employees and associates.

ɡěi měi ɡè hái zǐ liǎnɡ fèn“lái xǐ”(yīnɡ ɡāi zhǐ qián shì ǒu shù de),yīn wéi hǎo shì chénɡ shuānɡ ,bú yào zhǐ ɡěi yī fèn,zhè shì nǐ bǎ zhù yuàn chuán dì ɡěi xià yī dài de fānɡ fǎ,qǐ yè zhǔ yě yào ɡěi yuán ɡōnɡ hé tónɡ shì hónɡ bāo。
给  每  个 孩  子 两    份 “来  喜”(应   该  指  钱   是  偶 数  的),因  为  好  事  成    双     ,不 要  只  给  一 份 ,这  是  你 把 祝  愿   传    递 给  下  一 代  的 方   法,企 业 主  也 要  给  员   工   和 同   事  红   包。

8. Don’t wear white or black clothing, since they are the traditional colours of mourning.
bú yào chuān bái sè huò hēi sè fú zhuānɡ,yīn wéi zhè shì chuán tǒnɡ yì yì shànɡ sànɡ shì de yán sè。
不 要  穿    白  色 或  黑  色 服 装    ,因  为  这  是  传    统   意 义 上    丧   事  的 颜  色。

9. Don’t buy new shoes for the first month of the New Year, because the sound of shoe in Chinese is ‘hai’. “Hai” is similar to the sound of sighing, which Chinese believe is not a good way to start the year.
bú yào zài xīn nián de dì yī ɡè yuè mǎi xīn xié,yīn wéi zài hàn yǔ lǐ xié de fā yīn shì“hái”(hǎo xiànɡ shì sì chuān dì qū de fā yīn), tā yǔ tàn xī“āi”xiānɡ jìn,zhōnɡ ɡuó rén rèn wéizhè bú shì xīn nián yī shǐ de hǎo zhào tóu。
不 要  在  新  年   的 第 一 个 月  买  新  鞋 ,因  为  在  汉  语 里 鞋  的 发 音  是 “孩 ”(好  像    是  四 川    地 区 的 发 音 ), 它 与 叹  息“唉”相    近 ,中    国  人  认  为 这  不 是  新  年   伊 始  的 好  兆   头。

10. Don’t wash your hair for the first three days of the New Year, because the Chinese word for hair is a homonym for the Chinese word for wealth. Therefore, Chinese believe it isn’t a good thing to ‘wash away your wealth’ right at the start of the New Year.
zài xīn nián de qián sān tiān lǐbú yào xǐ tóu ,yīn wéi hàn yǔ lǐ“tóu fā”de“fā”hé“fācái”de“fā”tónɡ yīn.yīn cǐ,zhōnɡ ɡuó rèn wéi zài xīn nián yī shǐ bǎ cái fù ɡěi chōnɡ zǒu kě bú shì hǎo zhào tóu。
在  新  年   的 前   三  天   里不 要  洗 头  ,因  为  汉  语 里“头  发”的“发”和“发财 ”的“发”同   音 .因  此,中    国  认  为  在  新  年   伊 始  把 财  富 给  冲    走  可 不 是  好  兆   头。

11. Floors may not be swept and garbage may not be disposed of on the first day of the New Year for fear of casting riches out the door.
zài xīn nián dì yī tiān,bú tuō dì,bú rēnɡ lā jī,yīn wéi pà bǎ’cái’ɡěi sònɡ zǒu le。
在  新  年   第 一 天  ,不 拖  地,不 扔   垃 圾,因  为  怕 把’财 ’给  送   走  了。

12. Don’t swear or quarrel.
bú yào zǔ zhòu fā shì,yě bú yuàn chǎo jià。
不 要  诅 咒   发 誓 ,也 不 愿   吵   架 。

13. Don’t break any dishes, otherwise you may incur more misfortune for the New Year. In the event of breaking a dish, quickly say “Peace for all time”, and the bad luck will be warded away.
bú yào dǎ pò wǎn dié,fǒu zé zài lái nián nǐ kě nénɡ huì zāo yù bú xìnɡ,yī dàn dǎ pò le,yào mǎ shànɡ shuō “suì suì pínɡ ān”,zhè yànɡ huài yùn qì jiù huì  bèi ɡǎn zǒu le。
不 要  打 破 碗  碟 ,否  则 在  来  年   你 可 能   会  遭  遇 不 幸  ,一 旦  打 破 了,要  马 上    说   “岁  岁  平   安”,这  样   坏   运  气 就  会   被  赶  走  了。

14. Don’t greet people who are in mourning.
bú yào xiànɡ fú sànɡ qī de rén men wèn hòu(zhǔ yào zhǐ bú yào shuō xǐ qìnɡ de huà bɑ?)
不 要  向 服 丧   期 的 人  们  问  候 (主  要  指  不 要  说   喜 庆   的 话  吧?)

15. Don’t drop your chopsticks.
bú yào rànɡ kuài zǐ diào dì shànɡ。
不 要  让   筷   子 掉   地 上   。

16. Don’t say the number “four” (Chinese homonym for death) or mention death.
bú yào shuō shù zì“sì”(hàn yǔ lǐ hé“sǐ”xié yīn)huò zhě tí dào sǐ。
不 要  说   数  字“四”(汉  语 里 和“死”谐  音 )或  者  提 到  死。

17. Don’t borrow or lend money.
bú yào jiè qián yě bú yào jiè ɡěi bié rén qián 不 要  借  钱   也 不 要  借  给  别  人  钱  .
